The erectile dysfunction medication Trimix has been shown, time and time again, to be an effective remedy for men who haven’t had success with oral ED treatments.  It is available by prescription only and is a very powerful combination of three proven ED medications – phentolamine, papaverine, and alprostadil. Trimix is delivered via injection.  There is no standard dosage, and it is usually incrementally tailored to the individual via feedback between the patient and the prescriber.  However, the most common question people usually have about Trimix dosage is, “How many units of Trimix should I take?”  In this guide, we will help to answer that question and explore why there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

The Basics Of Trimix For Erectile Dysfunction

First, it’s useful to go over some of the basics of Trimix – what it is, how it functions, and so on.  Trimix is an erectile dysfunction treatment that is designed for local injection into the penis.  Unlike oral ED treatments, where any benefit or action is spread throughout the body and bloodstream, Trimix’s direct local action in the penis means it is often far more effective in generating an erection satisfactory for sex.

Though the administration method is different, Trimix works following the same general mechanisms of oral ED medications like Viagra and Cialis – specifically, relaxation of blood vessels and improving blood flow.  These are the two primary biological requirements to sustain an erection.  Because it’s generally more effective and powerful (and therefore, somewhat riskier), it is reserved as a secondary treatment for ED. It is only suitable for patients who have had no success with oral ED medications.

Most patients who have taken Trimix, both in studies and in the real world, have seen significant results.  As many as 95% of men reported satisfactory erections for penetrative sex thanks to Trimix, even after treatment with oral ED medications had failed them.

How Trimix Is Used

Before getting into the details on how many units of Trimix might be prescribed, let’s talk a bit about how patients typically use Trimix.  Patients who are prescribed Trimix are given advice and information on the proper handling and administration of the medication via injection.  An injection is usually in the middle third of the penis shaft, on alternating sides and avoiding all veins, around 20 to 30 minutes before sexual activity.  Proper administration reduces or eliminates any potential side effects or injuries that may otherwise occur to the penis with injection. Always use proper hygiene and safety precautions when performing an injection, especially in such a sensitive area.

Trimix, once injected, starts to work right away.  That is true, regardless of how many units of Trimix are in a given injection.  Most men start to see an erection resulting in as little as 5 minutes, which typically increases in rigidity over the course of 20 minutes or so.  The resulting erection most often lasts for one to two hours, and may or may not go away after orgasm or ejaculation.

However, as with all ED treatments, persistent erections can be a problem.  Erections lasting longer than 4 hours are dangerous and considered a medical emergency.  If proper dosage and administration instructions, precautions, and so on are observed, however, the vast majority of people taking Trimix do not experience any such complications.

Understanding Trimix Dosage

Trimix is supplied as a liquid medication in a vial, designed for injection.  In order to successfully administer Trimix, patients must understand liquid dosing amounts for injections.  For this purpose, it’s useful to define a few terms and units, so that there is no confusion as to proper dosing amounts.  Then we can move on to discussing how many units of Trimix are typically prescribed for patients.

Terms And Units

  • mL or milliliters – a measure of liquid volume, equivalent to 1 cubic centimeter (cc).
  • cc or cubic centimeter – a measure of volume, equivalent to 1 milliliter (mL) of liquid.
  • mcg or micrograms – a measure of mass, equivalent to 1/100th of a cubic centimeter (cc) or milliliter (mL)
  • units – in the case of Trimix and other injectable medications, this is a term synonymous with micrograms

So, given the above, the first thing patients should know regarding how many units of Trimix they should take is what a unit is – a microgram.  There are 100 micrograms in a cubic centimeter or milliliter of medication.  A doctor advising you to take, for example, 20 units of Trimix is saying you should be filling up a syringe with 20 mcg, or 1/5 mL of medication.

Some mixtures of the medication are diluted with saline, to make dosing and measurement easier on a larger scale, though the effective dosage units/amount also scales.  For example, a 10% solution of Trimix for the same effective 20 mcg/20 units dose would come with instructions to administer 200 mcg or 2 ccs/mLs of the diluted medication.

In all cases, whatever the particular mix, strength, and dosage that is recommended for you will be discussed with your doctor/prescriber.  You should be sure to ask them any questions or seek any clarifications to ensure you are only administering the correct dosage, as higher dosages carry an increased risk of side effects – including erections that require medical attention.

How Many Units Of Trimix Should You Take?

As discussed above, there is no generic or one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how many units of Trimix any individual should take.  However, there are some typical dosage ranges, best practices, and other details that may be helpful for those new to Trimix and dosing.

Lowest Effective Trimix Dosage

Since Trimix is a powerful medication, and the risk of side effects tends to increase as dosage increases, most prescribers will start patients out on a relatively small dose.  How many units of Trimix this may be can vary, but is generally below 25 (though we do offer some fairly standard and specific guidelines below).  This can then be adjusted upward by small amounts based on patient feedback and experience, up to a certain upper limit, until satisfactory results are seen.  Patients should always use the smallest effective dose, as, after a certain point, there is no benefit to increasing the dosage further, and the risk of side effects will increase significantly.

Discussion With Prescriber

In addition to a host of precautions regarding how frequently to use Trimix, and other medications to avoid while using Trimix (e.g., oral ED medications), most prescribers will discuss an appropriate starting dose, the amount by which patients can increase dosage each time, and an upper limit of how many units of Trimix to take in any single administration.  Most often, this roughly translates into:

  • A starting dose of between 5 and 20 units of Trimix.
  • Increasing subsequent dosages by no more than 5 units at a time.
  • Maximum dosage of 50 units of Trimix at a time.

That does not mean, however, when looking at how many units of Trimix may be useful for a given individual, that dosages higher than 50 units have not been prescribed.  Typically, however, these are special or less common cases requiring subsequent visits or consultations with the prescriber to ensure the patient’s safety.

Follow The Prescribing Information

The best chance of achieving a positive outcome with Trimix is to follow all of the prescribing information, literature, and instructions provided.  By doing so, and observing the precautions, administration instructions, and dosage guidelines set by your prescriber, you will likely see satisfactory erections suitable for sex, without the painful and potentially dangerous side effects like persistent or painful erections, priapism, or damage to the penis.  That’s why you should never rely on Internet searches or articles like this alone to determine how many units of Trimix are suitable.  Only your prescriber can tell you that safely.

Where To Get Trimix

Since Trimix is only available with a prescription, you can choose to get it by discussing with your primary care or men’s health specialist and seeking a prescription before you buy Trimix. If so, a prescription will be issued and transferred to the associated compounding pharmacy to be filled and sent to your home for you to start using.  Many men find this a more appealing and approachable alternative to embarrassing in-person discussions with their doctors.

Concluding Thoughts

If you are considering buying Trimix, and deciding if it might be right for you, then talk to your doctor.  Trimix has been shown to be very successful in treating ED, especially in men, for whom oral medications have not been effective.

Sourcing your Trimix through a licensed and reputable pharmacy, with a prescription, is the only way to go. You do not want to seek out counterfeit or contaminated medication, especially when it comes to injecting something into your penis.
